I’m feeling some kinda way about cancer right now. It’s really hitting close to home.

This year began with a friend posting on Facebook that he was in hospice care. His battle with cancer was coming to an end. He passed away in August … just days before his birthday.

Then a family member, at the young tender age of 16, was diagnosed with cancer. She endured cancer treatments for months and is now healed. Thanks be to God!

In July, a former work colleague passed. Cancer. Last week a childhood friend made his transition. Cancer.

My thoughts turned to a dear friend who passed away a few years ago. Cancer.
It seems like cancer is winning the war. But that’s just an illusion. Cancer is not winning. Cancer does not win.

I remind myself to look beyond the cancer and look at the person. The beautiful people who have lived their lives so well.

They have lived. They have laughed. They have loved.

So, sitting at a homecoming service on Friday, I listened closely to the words of friends who remarked about the giant impact of Richard’s life on theirs.

He was a fun, loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, mentor, teacher, bowling coach, basketball coach and youth ministry leader.

When the preacher eulogized my beloved friend, he made several points that I will treasure and apply to live more purposefully.

Here are those nuggets for living well.

  1. Make sure the work you’ve done speaks well for you.
  2. Help somebody everyday.
  3. Pour out your life as a drink offering to others.
  4. Invest your time into building up other people.
  5. Do not let the quality of your life be compromised by the quantity of your years.
  6. Prepare for death by living well.
